Follow a hapless hunchback who yearns for love, but finds himself in the middle of a murderous feud between the Pope and the king of France when each orders the hunchback to kill the other.
As a fan of Kevin Heffernan, his work (for the most part), and Super Troopers, what the actual hell is this movie? Not only are we wasting Brian Cox and his precious time on this earth, but we are wasting the time of every viewer who is expected to laugh at this dumb movie. Dumb fun is normally my cup of tea, as satire works extremely well when it hits right, and these actors occasionally know how to bring about laughs. It feels as if every major gag in Quasi misses the mark. Not only do the jokes never land, but the over-the-top physical performances feel awkward because the actors are trying so hard to make this script work. Even the cheap look to this should have made it funnier, but it just comes across as an unfunny movie that looks cheap. Normally, with a comedy, you are looking for a 70/30 split between how often you do or do not laugh. Quasi may be more along the lines of a 20/80 split, and saying I laughed 20% of the time is being lenient. Beyond all else, a comedy that is unfunny is a failure, but the story could have (at least) found one moment to attempt being compelling. The story of this hunchback is a tale as old as time, and the idea of making fun of this classic tale probably works on paper. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to this beyond overly physical gags and cringe-worthy impressions. Maybe I was in a bad mood while watching this… Or maybe it put me in a bad mood.
