Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.

Part of me (for some reason) always goes into this film trying to find flaws and finally dock it for not living up to my expectations. While I have slightly lowered my score, there isn’t much to hate on with this exciting sequel. It does indeed fall into a bit of a predictable rhythm at a point, the humor in the first half just doesn’t land as often as it needs to, and then you have another big cliché battle with robots/drones at the end of the film. What makes this sequel stand out? The answer and the overall key to victory here is the cast. Jake Gyllenhaal is absolutely in incredible in role, as he is essentially acting as a character playing a character for half of the film. He rocks as this villain, and the reveal, while obvious, is expertly handled.

This film also turned me around on MJ. Her delivery felt off in the first film, but she was able to capture the perfect amount of charm and chemistry with Holland in this one. It is also nice to see Spider-Man (or Night Monkey) get out of New York but still be able to capture that coming-of-age goodness that we love. I am still holding out for a great action scene with Holland’s version, but we do get some incredible sequences with Mysterio here. From the visuals to  Gyllenhaal‘s presence, there is so much to take in. We also have Peter dealing with the fallout of Stark’s death, and this gives us a few top-notch emotional scenes. It ranks a bit lower on my Spider-Man list, but this is still an absolute blast. I am beyond excited to see what the next one brings us. Happy Spider-Man Day!
