Second Time's A Charm
I know there's a legit character named after him, but Snowpiercer feels like Bong's attempt at a Terry Gilliam-style movie - a European-sounding premise, grimy texture, social satire that mocks the upper-class, and its cuckoo-bananas second half. He plays into the Heavy Metal-style premise real well (eventually).
That first half really does bring down the movie; it's just so long and the characters never really feel developed by the end. But that second-half is where a lot of the film's…
Is this the least amount of animation in a Warner's cartoon? I know it's a cheater, but damn this one is STRETCHING it.
In six minutes, I think there's two, maybe two and a half minutes of new animation, but a lot of its great. Yet on a time crunch, McKimson and Scribner deliver expert work - gorgeous Bugs animation here.
While it doesn’t completely hit the highs the series hit, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a great representation of everything Steve Hillenburg and his team were capable of - creating timeless characters with lots of hilarious drawings, gut-busting jokes, iconic moments and a surprisingly emotional throughline - and with a great musical number here and there.
Rest in Piece, Stephen - not only did he make one of the greatest cartoons of all time, but enriched the lives of millions with his art. He will be missed, but his work will live on forever.
