    this was one of my top five in high school. I think James Joyce said of Finnegan’s Wake that he hoped it would keep critics busy for centuries; Barton Fink doesn’t quite reach those heights of complexity, but there’s enough here to keep us busy for a really long time. the Coens are at their best when they’re applying this dense, dark style of filmmaking (which, on an unrelated note, might explain why I haven’t particularly loved their more recent, breezier work)

    I’ve wanted to see a live action Pokémon movie since at least 2000. this movie’s faults are many but the Pokémon are adorable and there’s an overall sense of absurd hallucinogenic wonder about this movie that’s just irresistible. what more could anyone want from a Pokémon movie?

    Curtis seems to leave open the interpretation (though he doesn't necessarily endorse it) that our situation today might be quite different from our current reality if the West had invaded Syria instead of Iraq or instead of aiding in the death of Gaddafi, which I don't particularly love.
