Drive My Car

Drive My Car ★★★★½

I wondered a lot about whether a three hour playtime was justified, but in the end I came to the conclusion that such a length is needed for such a immersive, compelling story.
It's a beautiful collage of confession, creativity, secrets, repression and regret and is both moving and so engrossing the 3 hours run time flew by.
The journey both physical and symbolic of kafuku and misaki, traversing pain through tunnels and empty roads, trying to leave behind the scars of a painful past that will not let them move on unless faced with it.
One of the things I love so much about loss and trauma movies is that it reminds us all the time that this is what life is all about. Wounds and past are all transformed into the key to our complete understanding of life. As the movie says we must try to live.
