The Tale

The Tale ★★★★

Ranking 2018

So many smart choices were made with The Tale, a profoundly upsetting and upsettingly profound autobiographical film that confronts the subjectivity of memory as only film can. The movie gets off a rough start; everything felt too deliberately blocked and spotless for a story we're made to expect upfront will be raw, authentic and messy. Eventually, in no small part thanks to the breakthrough performance from Isabelle Nélisse, The Tale finds its footing and delivers a devastating, timely and unnervingly universal look at abuse and its lasting effects.
