    The untapped potential here is unreal, neatly lining up almost everything I (conceptually) love to see in narrative-centric movies and then promptly letting almost all of the interesting possibilities slip by.     The reduction of this film to the status of "disturbing movie to watch for edgy credibility" is pretty disappointing and indicative of an inability on the modern audience's part to engage with Salo's skillful layering of political commentary, humanizing (but not necessarily sympathizing, which is essential) characterization, and complex maneuvering of emotional/tonal extremes without ever tipping into insensitivity or unbelievability; all of this is done without ever holding the audience's hands or preaching to them, and the extreme acts themselves…

    Horrifying. Just... horrifying. Aronofsky really got me with this one. Not only did he manage to grab me on an intellectual level, but also on an emotional one. This movie is going to be hated by many, I know that now. But for me, this is, hands down, the movie of the year.
