Kisses ★★★½

The December Project: Film #103

A stylised Irish indie production, Kisses plays with its opening and closing transitions from colour to black and white, using this rather simplistic visual metaphor to explore the difficult childhood of two suburban Dublin youths. Their adventure as they run away to the city together is plagued by such creaking devices, recurrent references to Bob Dylan perhaps the biggest offender, but the strength of the youth performances and the tough confrontation with the gritty reality of life make this a worthwhile viewing experience, and an interesting take on the darker underside of contemporary Irish life.
