Tim Robinson: Connemara

Tim Robinson: Connemara ★★★

The December Project: Film #63

A strange oddity of a documentary, "adapting" the memoirs and reminiscences of the eponymous cartographer, Tim Robinson: Connemara sees director Pat Collins putting his keen visual eye to full use in capturing the landscape of one of Ireland's key Gaeltachts. It's a curious piece, all hushed whispers and quiet observances, that manages to be quite enveloping despite its slightness, tied as it is to the experiences of one man that most won't find particularly relatable. Interesting to see the sort of thing Collins worked on before graduating to fiction filmmaking with this year's terrific Silence; it's work like this that has obviously laid the foundations for his masterpiece therein.
