  Frankly, I liked James Cameron’s remake of this a lot better.

  I had vaguely recalled seeing FernGully with my grandparents on its original theatrical release over three decades ago, and hearing it referenced on a podcast I listen to inexplicably inspired me to seek it out. Preamble aside, FernGully’s plot amounts to “plucky teen comes of age and learns to master her magical powers to save her kingdom, while forming a chaste romance with a boy from outside the kingdom” children’s fantasy…

  interesting HIV-scare premise makes for an ultimately unsatisfying gay teen coming-of-age flick set in 2011, and which feels awfully like an indie movie that would have been made in that year. strong points are an overqualified supporting cast and a cute romance subplot (which ends, well, unsatisfyingly), but found Sivan's character to be an unlikable prick for a large swath of the running time and didn't care much for the ending.
