Bartman’s review published on Letterboxd:
In director Robert Eggers' follow up to The VVitch, two men (Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe - giving his best Captain Birdseye impersonation) are to operate a lighthouse on a secluded island for four weeks. When a huge storm strands them there indefinitely, madness slowly overtakes them.
Black and white, in a nearly square frame, and with terrific, often disturbing imagery, this is bound to become a cult classic. It's also a bit overlong, repetitive and leads to an unsatisfactory ending.
It's as if Robert Eggers is working backwards: this feels like the flawed but promising low budget first feature, whereas The VVitch was the accomplished realisation of all that promise.
