A really excellent examination of the effect that a doomed love affair can have on people, the fall out of In The Mood For Love on Tony Leung's character especially. Whilst I could never agree with some reviewers who refer to this as his masterpiece, it is still a fascinating continuation of his discussion on the nature of love and interpersonal communication, selfishness and self preservation, memory and self delusion. It is its own piece of cinematic literature, not as self contained in its beauty and perfection, its on the messy side and overly long but still a very impressive piece of art. If ITMFL is something like a Richard Yates novel, 2046 would be a Don DeLillo.
