Lee Marvin won Best Actor for this movie. In a broad comedy supporting role that isn't funny. Best Actor. He beat Rod Steiger in The Pawnbroker. There's also an embarrassing whitewashed Indian character but I'm still pissed off about Lee Marvin.

This is supposedly a spoof of westerns but there's so little to differentiate this from just being a bad western with some dated comedy in it.

Tezza doesn't seem to have gotten too distracted by blades of grass on this one and the result is perhaps his most tightly-focussed, narratively straightforward film since Badlands.

It's a character study of one guy and his internal struggle placed in a gripping and grounded historical context - rather than the (sorry Malick fans) usual bloated, ethereal, self-indulgent faff around at magic hour. There's not even the self-parodic whispered narration.

    I liked it.

The USA's unwavering, uniquely bipartisan, and unquestioning worship of its military is bizarre and frightening.

At his most manipulative and morally certain, Spielberg will make the best propaganda when WWIII comes.

The real miracle is a good film about Jesus. I'm not sure it's intentional (I assume Scorsese has a reverence for Christ) but I love how this depicted him and other prophets of the day as sort of self-help motivational speakers. A definite "you can't change society, change yourself" vibe to some of his speeches. Dafoe gives great Jesus.
