Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★★

Words can’t describe fully how phenomenal this film is. Everything about it works to it’s fullest potential. This is easily my favorite film of the year, and I’d consider it perfect.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is, for the majority, a very quiet film. It’s hypnotizing in such a way that I had chills throughout most of the film.

Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel give the two best performances I’ve seen this year. They’re both absolutely incredible, and it’s a shame that they probably won’t get any Oscar recognition.

The cinematography is absolutely stunning. The exterior beach shots throughout the film are completely jaw-dropping, and it’s one of the most beautiful looking films I’ve seen in quite a long time.

Most of the film has no music whatsoever, which really gives it a quiet and almost calming feel. The few times music is used, it’s done brilliantly and leads to some of the most emotional moments in film I’ve seen all year.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire absolutely floored me. I was super surprised, even though I went in with very high expectations. This was a fantastic way to start the day, and it’s easily my favorite film of the year so far. Now to collect my thoughts, get some food, and see Jojo Rabbit in about 3 hours.
