I went into this movie with almost no expectations. I really only watched it because I think Jake Gyllenhaal is pretty and I was pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoyed it.
The beginning was a little slow but I find so many of the characters so charming. I see myself in them, which is something I love. There was a lot of really clever little jokes and one liners that genuinely made me laugh but some of the jokes didn’t quite land. For me, obviously, the star of the show was Jake Gyllenhaal, who absolutely delivered; not only did he look stunning in every scene, his acting, as always, was phenomenal. Some of the scenes reminded me of his performance in Nightcrawler, which was honestly Oscar worthy. Gyllenhaal is genuinely an incredible actor and clearly gave this part his all. The scene in which we learn more about his true intentions was honestly pivotal. After that, the movie really went up a notch in my opinion. Another notable scene was the confrontation between Peter and Mysterio, whose visuals rivaled the aesthetic of Doctor Strange (which is my personal favorite MCU film for...reasons). The stunning imagery really took me by surprise, it was ambitious and continues to push the boundaries of what can be done in these types of movies.
Overall though, this was very entertaining. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s self aware, clearly knows what it is trying to achieve and plays to its strengths. This is just another part of the MCU, a good ol superhero movie, another fun sequel.
