Ben Hibburd’s review published on Letterboxd:
I'm behind on my reviews so I'll make this short. "Ran" is a masterpiece. Seriously though, this might be the most visually arresting film Kurosawa has ever made and he was nearly blind when he made it. Truly incredible! The overall scope of this film was magnificent too. The battle sequences with thousands of extras gave this film an old Hollywood, David Lean-esque sensibility. Add in the Shakespearean writing and this film becomes something truly special. The two and a half hour runtime absolutely flew by! If you haven't watched this film I seriously can't recommend it enough, it's a stunning piece of filmmaking that showcases why the medium of film is as powerful as it is.
