Moonlight ★★★★½

Written and directed by Barry Jenkins, this is an overwhelming experience of sheer beauty and heartfelt agony, combining the best elements of touching films like Boyhood and Brokeback Mountain in a way which feels utterly and sympathetically genuine.

Not a single shot of Moonlight feels alienated. It's a brilliantly constructed and passionate adaptation of a stage play which feels unlike a play but a true documentation of urban culture and an examination of what it means to grow up in a culture that is never guaranteed to understand you.
