hard to pretend these will ever stop being anything less than very good, but I can't help but feel a little more emotionally disconnected as each one leans further and further into mind-bending sci-fi rules instead of dwelling on the emotions evoked by that curious existential place in our brains. this isn't to say I think Hertzfeldt has ever sacrificed his emotional integrity, but it does seem like he's having so much fun in this one messing around with paradoxical time travel logic that he lets what is usually the text of his work slide into subtext. and I don't think he's ever quite matched that perfect, simple, life-affirming-yet-melancholy tone he achieved in the original. still, there are some nice moments in here where he really takes his time and lets his animation play out beautifully without dialogue.
