Benny Athron’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Same as it ever was”
Rigorous and vigorous; shifting and vibrating as one exuberant entity. No area of the stage is uncharted, every nook and cranny is conscientiously explored with such passion. Instead of being subsided to audience level, it plants itself in the centre of the action amongst the artists themselves. This is intensely indulged early on, however as it continues, even the wider distanced shots inexplicably enforce the attachments’ security, to both the enveloping tunes and the zestful band members alike. The chemistry of Demme’s intoxicating direction and Byrne’s sprightly presence elevates the experience to immense levels that surpass any superficiality and whilst penetrating the brain with such ease. Unearthly in its surrealism through sound, its staggering to think that this wasn’t a fictional performance. It’s so blissfully polished yet fanatically vivacious, but I don’t know how to rate a concert movie on a platform solely designed for narrative features. All I can really say is that it set out to create an immersive understanding for the music of Talking Heads through spirited visualisation, and holy shit did it achieve that.
