I'm a sucker for crime films set in a gritty 1970s New York. This one begins well with a bodged heist and continues at a nice pace. Unfortunately, this is followed by a distinct lull and it's here that the film looses its way - and does so for far too long. The climactic ending is quite thrilling, satisfying and does make up for some wayward storytelling before it. But once a film loses its momentum, it tends to loose its audience and by this point my emotional connection already gone.

I once read that Richard Dreyfuss went home and vomited immediately after watching this film. Thankfully, the experience didn't have the same effect on me. But it's easy to see why it might. Even several days after watching it, the emotional sucker punch it delivers is palpable.

The lost city of Zzzzzzzz. More mediocrity from the sultan of snooze James Gray. The writer/director is forging quite a career out of turning what appear to be compelling ideas into soulless and drab cinema experiences. Such a shame in this case. Yet with a portfolio that includes The Immigrant, Two Lovers and We Own the Night, it’s hardly a surprise.

There are positives, including some wonderful cinematography from the brilliant Darius Khondji, an excellent, understated performance from Sienna Miller…

Silly but fun space horror. A sci-fi flick happy to eschew asking the big questions in favour of some classic man vs alien space action. Dubious science and predictable suckerpunches don't get in the way of a good time. Is it illogical and contrived? Yes. Have we seen it all before? Obviously. Is it fun? Hell yes.
