John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ★★★★

Life is suffering

First time watch: May 2019
Source: Netflix

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is the third installment with director Chad Stahelski returning and Keanu Reeves reprising the titular role. As a fallout to the sequel John Wick now finds himself on the run with a $14m bounty on his head.

With the announcement of both the fourth and fifth installments my concerns for this series grow as the sequels thus far have found themselves in a plot loop. The deep running theme of consequences remains at the core as John Wick finds himself constantly hunted down by hired assassins. The second and third titles in particular follow a very familiar pattern and whilst the technical aspect of the ruthless combat is flawless its beginning the slowly lose its appeal due to the sheer frequency of the sequences.

The path to paradise begins in hell

The John Wick world building continues to intrigue with the introduction of the Adjudicator and Elder but the constant return to the Continental and Administration can feel safe. There is quite a bit of downtime which unfortunately focuses on the bland Adjudicator character and stalls much of the pace whilst some of the writing continues to rely on some convenience to pull it through the necessary plot points.

One final concern is the apparent immortality of John Wick himself who appears to be able to survive anything literally thrown at him. Its bordering on superhero territory and means as a viewer we never genuinely feel hes in any real danger.
