Donkey Kong Kill Screen’s review published on Letterboxd:
Sad to report THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was a minor didappointment. The story is an incredibly simple one and I think it would have packed a bigger punch at a 60 or 70 minute running time. It just dragged for me to a lackluster finish.
However, this is very much worth watching for silent or early horror fans. Also, if you're a fan of witty notes, this is your movie. At least six notes were passed around by the characters and they were all hilarious.
Anyway, I absolutely loved the Carl Davis score on the version I watched and the famous colourful masquerade ball was incredible.
And Lon Chaney is just so damn watchable as the Phantom. Anytime he's on scene is a treat. Almost wish we got some more of him.
