Drugs and sex mainly
My understanding is that this film was not meant to be enjoyed in the traditional sense. What Kubrick was able to accomplish in just over 2 hours is nothing short of spectacular
I have never been to war or even watched real footage of it, I have no clue if what was portrayed was accurate. Does that even matter? This film puts you through the ringer, you feel hate towards the racial language, you feel sick from the violence and you feel love in the brotherhood. Kubrick was able to extract almost every human emotion in one film, and isn’t that the point of filmmaking.
