Completely understandable why this was a massive crowdpleaser back in 2000. Granted, its power feels considerably lesser now, if just because it was such an influence; I've seen countless indie movies that are Billy Elliot with a twist, but this keeps it simple, engaging and immensely emotional all around. The choreography is a highlight, but it's Daldry's and Bell's show mostly throughout, with really smart direction and a charming central performance. Billy Elliot feels generic looking at it after seeing its descendants, but it still packs enough of a punch to be a great movie. Really good!
