Upgrade ★★★½

Definitely lacks a clear creative identity/vision - the sci-fi world is mostly generic, and features many of the tropes we’ve seen before in these sterile, dimly-lit dystopian movie futures. Most of the characters feel pretty one-note and at times too inhuman to be believable, too.

But dang, dude, this is loads of fun. The action is surprisingly funny in a darkly over-the-top way, so much so that the first fight scene made the guy behind me yell “oh my LORD” - but yet it’s all pretty intense and thrilling, too. Probably the best action I’ve seen all year, actually. The social commentary is pretty clear-cut, but nevertheless well-blended into the narrative and the ultimately surprising resolution. I enjoyed it.
