The super 8 footage and haunting score harken back to a time before moving images seemed to exist, like showing the decay of the present through the eyes of the past, fading away faster than expected, a world someone of the time couldn't imagine, slowly deteriorating, where we can fix it, but is unlikely to happen.
The decay is real, and that's all Jóhann Jóhannsson seemed to be able to see.
