The last couple of days I've been relentlessly bullied and ridiculed for disliking 'The Big Lebowski'. So I decided to revisit it with an open mind, hoping that it wouldn't be as painful of an experience as it was the last time I saw it. From what I've heard this movie gets better with each viewing. Well, that wasn't the case for me. It was just as, if not more, obnoxious as the first time, and now I can actually tell why, because I knew what I was getting into.
First, I'd like to list off all the major characters with their main attributes and some general thoughts about them.
The Dude: Annoying, obnoxious, loser idiot who does everything wrong, and in the end doesn't face any sort of repercussion. He doesn't have an arc and honestly feels like a character out of an average Adam Sandler type comedy.
Walter: Probably the only even remotely enjoyable character simply because of John Goodman's performance, who tries his hardest to save this garbage, but still fails, since the writing is lazy and uninspired. He is just this typical "army dude" who's only gimmick is that he screams and thinks he know everything, but fails, since he is just as much of a loser idiot as The Dude. He actually had the only joke that I thought was funny. I don't exactly remember how it went, but it was something like pacifism is just emotional problems. You probably know what I'm talking about whatever. It was pretty subtle and he didn't scream it.
Donny: No character, no jokes, nothing. Just a simple punching bag for Walter. Completely pointless in almost every way except for the ending, which I won't spoil. All I'll say is that it's one of the least satisfying endings I've ever seen. It just happens and goes away.
Maude Lebowski: Annoying and obnoxious (this came to my mind a couple of times). She might actually be one of the worst characters I've ever seen in a movie, outside of some annoying comic relief who's only purpose to be an incompetent idiot. Every single word she said made my skin crawl.
Brandt: I love Philip Seymour Hoffman and honestly he wasn't bad either, but all of his jokes came down to the most obvious and predictable thing possible. All of them were about how uncomfortable he is around The Dude and that he is a socially awkward upper class assistant of a rich guy.
Every other side gag was just so predictable and awful. The one with the hispanic guy was probably the worst one. I'm not offended by the way he was portrayed, but it was just so lazy. "Oh look, he is hispanic so we should play some spanish music and have him talk in a funny accent. Isn't it funny that his name is Jesus?". Julianne Moore's character: "Oh look, he is an overly sexual weirdo artist who can only talk about sex". "Oh look some german guys who talk in a funny accent and play german synth music. They are nihilists and we will remind you of this, because it was just so hilarious the first time". Every joke was just so clichéd and lazy.
There was nothing visually outstanding either. Oh I know, that part where the bowling pin went between the two bowling balls. That was hilarious. Or when they cut like 3 times to a side gag that was completely irrelevant to the story or anything else that was happening.
Okay I think I've had enough. I'm just ranting at this point. Feel free to argue with me, I don't care. This film is shit, fuck off.
