    Simply beyond just being a film, House is an experience. The boundaries of the haunted house subgenre are pushed beyond any limits, gifting us a film that’s equal parts brilliant and baffling. What it lacks in technical prowess it makes up for with playful experimentation and inventiveness, shoving us into this utterly wild and very Japanese fever dream. This is one of the purest examples of cinematic genius that I’m even lucky to have seen.

    TimothΓ©e Chalamet’s character Elio sits by the fireplace, his cheeks ripen and flush into shades of pink as tears slide down his face like dewdrops on leaves. The beautiful song β€œVisions of Gideon” by Sufjan Stevens plays as we sit with him. The camera fixates on wallowing in Elio’s heartbreak, this is the film’s climax, a culmination of all that the film leads up to.Β

    John Carpenter is one of my personal heroes and one of my favourite directors, with many classics under his belt. Films such as Halloween, The Thing, They Live, and Big Trouble in Little China stand as some of my favourite films ever, and whilst In the Mouth of Madness hasn’t quite exactly made into the pantheon of my favourite films, it is still a very excellent picture. And dare I say, quite ahead of its time.

    Usually whenever I watch a film and rate it on this platform, I do it almost immediately.
