ben schwartz’s review published on Letterboxd:
well known as spielberg’s favorite movie, and the one he apparently watches before he shoots any new picture, it’s only on this revisit that i saw its influence on raiders of the lost ark. both indy and lawrence are amoral, failed colonialists who accomplish little, and what they do accomplish gets taken away from them in the end. indy loses the ark, and lawrence sees arab independence slip out of his hands. and they lose those things for the same reason, their naiveté in dealing with the american and british empires they serve.
