Bob McCully’s review published on Letterboxd:
Riki-Oh is a flash of lightning in this dark and dreary world. As an adult this movie is infinity fire emojis, as a kid this would have made me feel like I was somehow having a nightmare and playing a video game at the same time.
There's even a slight Peter Jackson quality to it that for something so campy and low budget looking it eventually breaks through that glass ceiling, spin-kicking all limitations and prevailing on an elixir of imagination and angst. The story, pacing, and cinematography all form a tornado that destroys anyone scoffing at a "b-movie".
Riki-Oh's world is pure bubblegum depravity though. Every scene is full of cheery line delivery and unforgettable acts of cruelty. This film has such a unique tone and it succeeds by just committing 1000% to this singular vibe.
I legit said "holy f**k this movie is awesome" probably around 19 times while watching this.
Would make a killer double feature with Burning Moon.
