Back in 1989, a legendary filmmaking career was born when renowned television personality and eccentric comedian Takeshi Kitano went behind the camera for the first time with his explosive Yakuza thriller VIOLENT COP.
A directorial debut that subverted audience expectations with its unflinching brutality and bleak outlook, Violent Cop marked the arrival of Kitano as a serious filmmaker who is now firmly established as of the greats of contemporary Japanese cinema.
Kitano’s brooding and frighteningly unpredictable on-screen persona is now internationally recognized since his role in the cult-hit Battle Royale from 2000, and here he brings that edge to his compelling performance as the reckless detective whose methods become increasingly chaotic.
