The AFI top 100 Club: Sunset Boulevard
Gloria Swanson is amazing in this film. All of the actors are the directing is good the cinematography is really good. It's one of those films where you can just say in list off the great things it's not one of those deep films you could go into hours I mean I guess you could. But to me this film isn't the Masterpiece everyone says it is. Yes it's really really good it. But it's not because it does something special it's because it does the things that other films does so much better. I'm probably alone on this but I don't see any hidden meaning I don't see anything special in the film. Although the writing is incredible there's no deep meaning that I see but the writing is just great. It's like the Shawshank Redemption. The director and writer have said multiple times that the film isn't some sort of deep meaning. But the script is just written so well. This feels kind of like the Shawshank Redemption. Actually it feels like the Shawshank Redemption and the Silence of the Lambs. And by that I mean the Shawshank Redemption I consider one of the top two greatest written films ever. The Silence of the Lambs I think it's the greatest acted film ever. You get the feeling that I think of when I think of good writing and you get the film I think of when I think of good acting you motion together and you get Sunset Boulevard. This film has a great great acting and really good writing. As I said earlier Gloria Swanson is the best part of this film she goes deep into this character. They could not cast this more perfectly. And she feels like one whole year we spend reading every little bit of the script every scene that she was in, and she studied them didn't get any sleep didn't eat at all didn't do anything other than read every scene with this character in it. She goes into every little bit of the character that is unexplored all the what if with this character. I think Gloria Swanson should have won every single award for playing this character. There's really not much for me to say about Sunset Boulevard it's good it's not the Masterpiece that everyone says it is it least to me. It's definitely good and probably should have won best picture over All About Eve but I haven't seen All About Eve yet so that might change when I see it.
You should definitely watch it but don't expect a big masterpiece if you really want to expect a masterpiece you should probably go into this thinking it's not. This review probably doesn't make a lot of sense but to me it does.
