I drove home again. I hate driving, but I need to do it in order to go places. Every time I drive I am terrified that I might hit another car. I’m not scared if I’ll be hurt, I’m afraid another car may be damaged, even though it hasn’t happened yet. I’m not sure why I have this anxiety, but it’s something that bothers me greatly. Beau’s world is a lot like how I feel when I am tense. Everything…

Extraordinary stuff. Everything leading up to the midpoint reveal is really terrific filmmaking. I knew where it was going, but that’s only a result of this being so influential, but the sense of paranoia leading up to that point is what sold it all for me. The second half delves a lot more into the philosophical notion of what the reveal entails, which I found to be really ahead of its time. I’ve seen these conversations before in later works,…

It’s nice to go to the theater and watch a completely solid competent horror film. It has a ton of cliches and doesn’t do a ton to stand out, but it has enough style to make it worth watching. I quite liked the score and thought it looked nice. There’s a strong grasp on tone here. The creature at the end also looked really cool!

It’s got all you want in a movie, really. Knowing what was going on this time, I was deeply effected by just how genuinely sad it was. The camera moment really emphasizes this, and the coldness of the setting. Adjani and Neill are giving two of my favorite performances here. I love how theatrical everything is. It’s just such a nasty upsetting film, but it’s also just so well made and emotionally resonant.

It’s cute. There are a few problems with the third act, and the reveal didn’t work for me, but the animation and rest of the plot is fantastic. The movie is very funny and has a lot of heart. The voice work was well done. I liked the mix of 2D and 3D animation, both sides of the film looked good respectively. It’s a crowd pleaser, and is certainly hard not to enjoy. It’s not my favorite film from Hosoda but it’s a solid entry in his filmography. I recommend this one, hoping it gets some awards buzz for animated.
