The second half of this is such a long kick in the nuts, after such a 'beautiful' first half.
Going into this, i had no clue what it was about, but holy hell it's stunning. The first half is a hilarious, brilliant joy-ride that is simmering with fascist tension boiling underneath in WWII Italy.
The second half, however, is as haunting as they come. A dad desperately trying to keep his son's life intact and happy, despite the atrocities being committed in and around them. It's a devastating blow to the film, but Benigni's performance is top-draw throughout and the harrowing nature of the second half is something that will be stuck in my mind for a long time.
