I’ve been emotionally bamboozled.
At first, I thought Tolkien was going to be a lacklustre slog devoid of any artistic merit - an Oscar-bait biopic about a privileged toff that has been told many times before.
I have never been more wrong. Sure, it's a fairly standard story with beats that bumble along a well-trodden path. I'm not contesting that. But it would be wrong if I didn't admit I was moved by the entire thing. That's probably thanks to Thomas Newman's score that acts as a perfect accompaniment to the wholesome visuals of love and language against the backdrop of a horrific war.
