Still a heartbreaking, beautiful film. After reading through most of Hakuri Murakami's Men Without Women, which includes the short story from which this movie was adapted, I appreciate this film even more. Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe took a decent short story and molded it, expanded it, shaped it into an expansive, insightful, relatable movie. Murakami's characters are a bit shallow and flat--though I think that's a fault of short stories more than Murakami's characterizations themselves. But the screenplay writers' ability to flesh out that tale, take its themes and mood, and create this? Astounding.
