Around the World in 80 Films #43 — Norway
The joke review “actually, she’s not that bad a person” describes one of the main problems here; despite a title and premise that suggest transgression and bad behavior the movie never really risks being disliked, or defines this character well enough for her to inspire strong feelings. It’s one thing to decide the heroine of a romantic comedy should behave more realistically than Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding, but the stylistic flourishes began to feel, around the time of the mushrooms sequence, like they were covering up a lack of interiority and drama. The movie never leaves you alone to stew over the consequences of actions, at least not until the final moments, which I at least respected.
