Phantom Thread

Phantom Thread ★★★★½

Only PTA could make a scene that involves ordering food so romantic and lovely to watch. There’s quite a lot of humour in this which is a nice touch and helps balance out all of the toxic scenes we see with Reynolds and Alma, which is a very fascinating dynamic to watch. Their relationship is troubled from the start because of how Reynolds puts his career first before anyone else and Alma is there as more of a servant than a lover, she’s always there for him but he doesn’t pay enough attention to her and makes her feel alienated. The music is really well done in this as well, Jonny Greenwood’s score is gorgeous, soothing and lingers effortlessly behind each scene. I wish Daniel Day-Lewis still made films because this and There Will Be Blood are two of the best acted films of the 21st century and I need at least one more collab with PTA to complete the trilogy.
