“If I don't protect myself, somebody will come in the middle of the night and take over my corner of the room and ask me about their fucking asparagus!”
DDL went out like the damn method messiah with this one. The most sensuous, gluttonous, and tactile movie dripping with excess. Pure sex on screen. The Hungry Boy scene is peak innuendo asking “can you meet me on my level” and through the whole movie Alma answers “can you meet me on mine?” Undressing each other always as he dresses her and she poisons him. A psychosexual musing that rates with the very best of Hitchcock and beyond, with camerawork and a score that are out of this world. Despite an acid-laced script the rich film grain and lush period sets coalesce into the coziest film that I just melt into every time. An elemental romance unbounded by dust and ghosts and time.
