Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★½

I liked it, I don't love it, I have no desire to wade into the internet uproar over it.

I'll say this. On one hand, I find some of Johnson's compositions truly striking (he's the most visually daring artist to make one of these yet) and as a writer he's going for something really daring in terms of breaking down your legends in a film like this one. When BDT mentioned "the machine," I chuckled (there's no bigger entertainment machine right now). But I feel like a lot of that screenwriting effort is muted and muffled by wheel-spinning plot machinations. It's undeniably too long to me. I want to see it again to be certain of its strengths and weaknesses. And I'm thinking I will like it more without the uproar and expectations to impact me. My boys loved it, and that's what really mattered to me today. When someone said something about people coming for Leia because they love her, my eldest whispered "Everyone does." That kinda rules for parents of my generation.

Most of all, I think it's funny that I'm nervous to say I thought it was "good" because I feel like the extreme opinions on both sides will yell at me. That's where we're at now. All or nothing. When this is somewhere in between (and closer to all).
