  • The Night Comes for Us

    The Night Comes for Us

    ★★★★

At one point, one bad guy is tased and the shock forces his trigger finger down, which turns another bad guy's head into a blob of blood and tissue.

    This is cinema.

  • Jacob's Ladder

    Jacob's Ladder

    ★½

I’m not convinced anyone involved even saw the original.

  • Magnificent Obsession

    Magnificent Obsession

    ★★★★

Ridiculous and sublime at the same time. It’s not as perfect as my favorite Sirks but it’s still so wonderful so often. I saw this three decades ago so this was basically a first view. Didn’t remember most of it.

  • The Angry Birds Movie 2

    The Angry Birds Movie 2

    ★★½

In all subcategories - animated sequel based on an app released in August - this should be torture. But it’s just surreal and quirky enough to almost work.

    2019 is full of surprises.

  • Brightburn

    Brightburn

    ★★½

Pre-teen boys are the fucking worst.

  • Bob Lazar: Area 51 and Flying Saucers

Bob Lazar: Area 51 and Flying Saucers

    ★½

I have a sinus infection and wanted something I didn’t have to pay much attention to but would still keep me entertained and all this did was bore me to death. Thanks a lot, aliens.

  • The Curse of La Llorona

    The Curse of La Llorona

    ★½

More like Curse of La Bore-ona.

Sorry. I’ll see myself out. It was really boring and thinking of this kept me entertained.

  • Gremlins

    Gremlins

    ★★★★★

    An American Classic.

  • The Intruder

    The Intruder

    ★★★

It's too bad so much of it has to rely on Meagan Good being the most naive character in the world but Dennis Quaid makes up for it by completely leaning into his blend of charisma and menace.

  • The Maus

    The Maus

    ★★

I told you people to stop leaving your house. Some interesting ideas undone by poor filmmaking.

  • Into the Dark: School Spirit

    Into the Dark: School Spirit

    ★★½

I Know What You Did Last Breakfast Club

    Almost works.

  • Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

    ★★★

It’s about family! And a supervirus. And Dwayne Johnson’s abs. And Jason Statham’s head. And Vanessa Kirby’s eyes. And Black Superman. But mostly family!
