    The Red Sea Diving Resort

If you're wondering why you haven't heard of this Netflix movie before now, it's probably because it's very, very bad. More in a full review tomorrow on RE.

  • Domino

It starts really promisingly and contains signs that we may yet get another De Palma masterpiece but this ain’t it.

  • Alita: Battle Angel

    Alita: Battle Angel

At first, I really liked it. Strong world-building, character design, performances. Then it lost me with all the Rollerball shit and a love story that doesn't work. Then it got me back! Mostly. It's a rollercoaster!

It's one of those odd movies that I wouldn't blame anyone for loving OR hating, but I'm somehow in the middle.

  • Hellboy

Incomprehensible, loud, poorly edited action sandwiched between exposition dumps that are impossible to care about. It’s a Tenacious D album come to life without the wit. More like Shitboy.

    Murders in the Zoo

This movie is cuckoo. And nearly great.

  • Missing Link

    Missing Link

Gorgeous and I dug the screwball comedy but it’s a bit thin in character and theme, especially for LAIKA. Still, amazing that minor films from this company can still work this well.

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Bits of Hollywood history filtered through Tarantino’s filmography with phenomenal performances from Leo and Pitt. Much more in a review soon but this is a movie that people will be arguing about all year. In other words, the kind of movie I wish we got more of.

  • Klute

The first half is mesmerizing and Fonda and Gordon Willis are amazing throughout but the back half gets way less interesting. It feels like the thriller never interested Pakula nearly as much as the character study.

  • Shazam!

I really enjoyed this! It’s dopey and loose in a way that superhero movies are rarely allowed to be. Levi is excellent and it’s got just the right level of playfulness to not feel forced. A better villain and tighter first act and it coulda been legit great.

My middle son adores movies about unexpected heroism - Ralph movies and Iron Giant and BTTF being faves. In other words, he’s gonna watch this 149 times.

I’m not quite as over the moon as some of my colleagues but I am ALL IN for whatever this director does next.

  • Silent Hill

    Silent Hill

The first Tuesday of every month, my village tests the emergency sirens, which means I think about Silent Hill monthly.

The best video game movie ever made. It's even better than I remember and the Shout Factory release is spectacular.

  • Shangri-La

I want to hang out with Rick Rubin.
