    Why so serious?

In many ways, the most pretentious movie of the year with its desperate desire to be taken seriously often drowning out Phoenix’s typically stellar work. I don’t think Phillips ever figures out how to use him.

  • The Laundromat

    The Laundromat

    ★★½

A very rare Soderbergh misfire. Sad Brian.

  • Abominable

    Abominable

    ★★½

There’s a fine line between simple & sweet and flat & unambitious and this crosses it.

  • True History of the Kelly Gang

True History of the Kelly Gang

    ★★½

Doesn’t get any deeper than “some people think I’m a hero and some people think I’m a murderer.” Loud and angry but shallow. There’s a chubby baby that screams a lot in one scene. I am that chubby baby.

  • Zombi Child

    Zombi Child

    ★★½

There’s a lot to unpack here regarding culture and appropriation and dead-eyed teenagers but it never quite coheres the way I hoped it would. A just miss. There’s a lot to unpack here regarding culture and appropriation and dead-eyed teenagers but it never quite coheres the way I hoped it would. A just miss.

  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters

    Godzilla: King of the Monsters

    ★★½

I really liked some of the compositions but the plot is more incoherent than it needs to be. I’m not saying this needed to be plot heavy but it tries just enough to be annoying in its failure.

My favorite scene: There’s a moment in which Farmiga’s character explains her motivations and she has accompanying stock footage edited together to go with it. “Let’s get some b-roll for when I reveal my plan!” Hysterical.

  • The Angry Birds Movie 2

    The Angry Birds Movie 2

    ★★½

In all subcategories - animated sequel based on an app released in August - this should be torture. But it’s just surreal and quirky enough to almost work.

    2019 is full of surprises.

  • Brightburn

    Brightburn

    ★★½

Pre-teen boys are the fucking worst.

  • School Spirit

    School Spirit

    ★★½

I Know What You Did Last Breakfast Club

    Almost works.

  • Murder Mystery

    Murder Mystery

    ★★½

Just entertaining enough to make you wish it was good.

  • X-Men: Apocalypse

    X-Men: Apocalypse

    ★★½

Better than I remembered but still not very good.

  • Happy Death Day 2U

    Happy Death Day 2U

    ★★½

I really want Rothe to be a star but was hoping this would actually get darker and moodier and not just weirder.
