I finally saw jojo rabbit.
I had to put up with some moaning loud teenagers in the back but they got yelled at and they quited down. A pretty interesting surreal theater experience at the amc today.
I really can’t say anything bad about this film. This is just another one of those perfect movies.
It tackles Nazi Germany so daring and so brilliantly making it hillarious, but making it still feel for the most part historical and realistic with the quirkiness of Taika Waititi thrown in.
Everybody is genuinely great in this film. Especially Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo. He just plays the character so amazingly for an 11 year old, making him feel so multi dimensional, and great subtlety about how a young child raised on a certain concept or idea, can get so engrossed at a young age and not knowing how bad it really is until discovering something that disproves the mentality. I don’t know if it’s possible but he deserves best actor.
Thomasin McKenzie is also great as this Jewish girl hidden by Jojo’s mom Rosie, played also wonderfully by Scarlett Johansson that befriends Jojo and shows him that his Nazi mentality is not right and Jojo learns that the world isn’t as black and white as he thought it was.
Taika Waititi also plays a hillarious Hitler (never thought those words would go together) ,satiring him hillariously, and whenever I think about Taika Hitler I crack up because of how hillarious it is which shows it’s brilliance.
Also Rebel Wilson can actually be a funny actress!
Sam Rockwell and Stephen Merchant are also great as they always are.
Newcomer Archie Yates is also hillarious and charming as Jojo’s best friend, Yorki.
Overall Jojo Rabbit perfectly blends satire comedy with great messages and themes around the Nazi Germany very real events, and it is easily in my top 5 of the year, possibly the best, I still think lighthouse beats it out a bit, but it is very very close. It’s my dad’s favorite of the year also.
Go see this movie, it’s amazing, and if for nothing else, the best use of the 1 F word in any PG-13 movie ever.
Fuck off hitler!
