Not as bad as expected, but not that good. A couple of decent performances, a couple of dull ones and no one really standing out. Kinda bland horror/thriller elements and the pacing felt a little wrong (probably because we were aware of the twisty-ness and many of the visual elements from the trailers). But the costumes and production were good, and tbh, I came away most impressed with the score.

Plenty of things left unexplained, and the sad part is: I'm not left with enough conviction about what the movie was trying to say to try and sort those things out. It's an alright time.

Let me preface by saying: Wes Anderson films have been my movie comfort blanket for a long time. He's my favorite director out there. I'm also a journalist who, while having never written for a newspaper, does love romanticized tellings of what papers do.

It's hard to describe the French Dispatch as a whole...I think the easiest way is to say it's Anderson dialing up his own motifs another notch (which, I know, sounds ridiculous.) I imagine most folks' qualms…

Solid 4-star: some stellar performances + casting, impressive fight choreo (they made it very brutal for being PG-13!), engaging larger themes and good story. I think there may have been one or two elements that make it less streamlined, but no matter. It's a good time and it definitely deserved a solid opening weekend.
