    Fantasy Island

    ★½

FANTASY ISLAND starts off as a clever update to the 1970s Saturday night TV staple but digresses into a silly haunted house-style movie complete with typical horror jump-scares galore and an outrageously ludicrous finale that reeks of pure screenplay flop-sweat.

What's next? THE LOVE BOAT as a slasher picture? MAUDE as an action extravaganza?

    ★★★½

A large part of Roger Corman’s popular AIP Poe cycle is to appreciate what big-looking pictures Corman created with so little money. The films look so rich and lush, when in fact they were done on the cheap, and in this particular title’s case, in 15 days.

The moody production has a wooden cast surrounding star Vincent Price - which permits Price the full stage to go to town on the macabre material with great aplomb.

    Staid, cerebral but quite effective.

2.) More Detailed - the viewer's eye is drawn into not just the actors, but to their expressive faces, as well as to the landscapes and especially the production's vehicle design

    3.) Easier To…

    21 & Over

    ½

21 & OVER is about as derivative and thoroughly unlikable a motormouth comedy as you'll find. It's a complete waste of everyone's time.

Jon Lucas & Scott Moore - the writers of THE HANGOVER - attempt another night-in-the-life fable of wild partying and male bonding through embarrassing situations, this time replacing the smug mid-thirties assholes with entitled college-aged assholes. Big switch.

The deja-vu set-up finds a straight-A Med student (Justin Chon) dragged out for a collegial beer or two on the night…
