For my movie challenge I watched Michael Haneke’s 2007 English remake of his own 1997 film, also entitled FUNNY GAMES. In these movies, a nuclear family of a husband, wife, child, and dog are attacked by a couple of local boys while on vacation. The boys incapacitate them, toy with them, and threaten to kill them within 12 hours.

    First 20 minutes = 5 stars
Rest of the movie = 3 stars

This is going to go on to become a canonized opinion, like how everyone loves the first half of Full Metal Jacket. My least favorite bit is still the street chase with the baskets (outside the awesome swordsman scene, obviously) because I think it's generally best when it peppers in comedy as…

    True Romance

    ★★★★½

How on earth did I miss seeing True Romance for so long? What an exhilarating film. It has all the earmarks of a Tarantino script - the pulp culture dialog, the foreboding buildup to violent outbursts - and none of the stupid tics and hyperactive editing that would mar Tony Scott's later career. Imagine if 1993 Tony Scott had made Man on Fire! It might have been a good film. True Romance, while certainly less distinctive in its visual style…
