Annette ★★½

"We love each other so much."

They love each other, but I didn't really love them. I appreciate the boldness of this film and what the director was trying to do. It had the musicality of Repo! The Genetic Opera, the visuals of David Lynch, and the attempted grandiosity of an MGM musical. All of that said, it missed the mark a bit for me. I couldn't get invested in the story. It was too weird for the sake of being weird. Why the rash on his face? Why the puppet? At times it felt like a criticism of pop culture and the obsession of celebrity figures, but it didn't lean into that enough. I really enjoyed Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard's performances, but nothing else was my cup of tea. Thank god I wasn't at Cannes clapping for 20 minutes.
