When the [ex] cop breaking bad is actually a heartwarming and inspirational moment of overcoming deep regret and taking control of one's life. Cool, visually gorgeous (love Kitano's paintings), poetic, and very strange all at once; for now I'd say I prefer Sonatine, but this is still excellent. When he's in his element, Kitano is very much up my alley.

Was surprised by just how much of this is a procedural, but sure enough, when the Lieutenant goes Bad, it is a joy to watch Cage act like a lunatic and Herzog's hallucinatory flourishes. Some of the best crackhead acting you're gonna see. Hail Cage!

"If I keep staring at them, one moment it'll hit me. Instinctively."

a serial killer movie set in a country that's not inundated with these sorts of crimes and these sorts of stories. profiling is relegated to just instinct. crime scenes are trampled on. DNA evidence has to be sent to America for testing.

i was curious as to how Bong's famous tonal juggling act would work with such grim subject matter and, predictably, he plays it off masterfully. Song…
