what really held Fantastic Planet together for me was the awesome psych-funk score. the sketchbook, cutout feel of the animation style provides some truly odd, vibrant, and striking sci-fi images but - and this could be blasphemous - also looks a little crude in spots and could use some updating.
i appreciated the totally surreal atmosphere and almost inscrutable alien jargon but at the same time, i feel like the weirdness muddles Fantastic Planet's social commentary. nonetheless it still works as a quick and wonderfully weird trip and i will be spinning that score for the next few weeks for sure.
